We can assist your polymeric materials QA efforts with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy ...

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NMR)

NMR is a quantitative technique for analyzing soluble materials or extracts to determine the organic chemical components of a sample.  In certain cases, solid materials can also be analyzed.

The most commonly used elements analyzed for structural determination of organic polymers and small molecules are proton (1H) and carbon (13C).  Other elements can be analyzed as well, such as silicon (29Si) and fluorine (19F).

NMR is a complimentary technique to FTIR. The PSI experts can help you to determine which method is right for your analytical objectives.

Applications:
  • Chemical identification
  • Polymer Identification
  • Compositional analysis
  • Copolymer and blend ratio determination
  • Identification and quantification of contamination
  • Material certification
  • Competitor product analysis

Examples of Recent Projects

Nylon Analysis
A client needed to know the copolymer levels of nylon in a material they were producing under different process conditions. We were able to determine the nylon 6 and nylon 6,6 copolymer ratios present in the sample using 13C NMR.

Polyethylene Analysis
A client was experiencing sudden failures in a molded HDPE product. 13C NMR comparing a “good“ lot of the product and the “bad” lot of the product indicated significant differences in the grade of polyethylene used in the manufacture of the product. The client was able to trace the failure back to their polymer compound supplier.
