Adhesion Failure Analysis
A client had a carpet returned to them because a logo had fallen off. The cause of the adhesion failure needed to be determined so that the problem could be prevented in the future.
Comparative microscopy showed that the failed logo had little to no adhesive stuck to the back of it and a good logo had much more adhesive present after it was purposfully removed from the carpet. Along with Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) data, it was concluded that the logo on the failed sample had never experienced the temperature needed to soften the hot melt adhesive and cause bonding of the logo to the carpet. These coupled techniques allowed for the failure to be identified in the manufacturing process where the client applied the logo to the carpet.
