Plasticizer Analysis
Plasticizers increase the flexibility of manufactured plastic and rubber products.

SGS PSI performs analysis to determine the plasticizers that are in products and the concentration of plasticizers by using Gas Chromatography coupled with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Plasticizer analysis is important for confirming the composition of raw materials and finished products.
Samples are typically solvent extracted, and plasticizer analysis is performed using the extraction solvent.
Plasticizer testing is typically performed using GC-MS. The GC-MS method separates mixtures of polymer additives and provides identification of the plasticizer chemicals. This method also provides concentrations of each identified plasticizer.
We perform plasticizer analysis for a variety of compounds, including the six phthalates specifically mentioned in Section 108 of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008:
The sample size required for plasticizer analysis is 1 to 5 grams.
The highly sensitive GC-MS method can provide analysis of plasticizer that is an intentional ingredient, usually in the 1 to 30 percent range, or detect trace amounts that result from contamination or other sources.
