USP Pharmaceutical Testing (cGMP)

HPLC analysis is used to determine the concentration of denatonium benzoate in plastics.

Denatonium benzoate is one of the bitterest compounds known and is frequently used as a bitterant in many applications.  Uses range from denaturing liquids and gases to the addition to plastics and coatings as a pest deterrent.

Approaches

The amount of denatonium benzoate in a compound can be determined through high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array (PDA) detection.

Sample Considerations

Up to 10 grams of material may be requested.  However, the amount can vary depending on the concentration of denatonium benzoate in the sample and lesser amounts may be sufficient.

Experience

This general method is used for multiple plastic additives.
