About Stress Testing

The tolerance of materials to bending, tension, and compression are most often assessed along with measuring the elastic properties of the material.

  • Approaches

We perform testing of high extension rubber materials using our laser extensiometer.

The flexural strength of rigid unsaturated polyester cure in place pipe (CiPP) sections are routinely tested using our three point bend fixture.

Specialized stress tests can be configured.  For example, we have performed stress testing of bioabsorbable screws in a cyclic compression mode while immersed in saline at elevated temperature, this was a product-specific custom stress test.

  • Sample Considerations

Stress testing is a method of evaluation that requires a fairly large amount of sample.  For flex testing, for example, the test specimens may be an eighth inch thick, an inch wide, and six inches long. Total sample mass of 1 to 5-lbs is reasonably typical.

Some specimens are required to set the instrument parameters and then five to seven replicates are required to obtain a complete data set.

Pellets need to be converted to slabs, sheets, or molded.
