Klear the Aisle – There’s a New Can in Town

Let’s be real greenmbeans– the canned food aisle at the grocery store isn’t that exciting. It’s stocked with labeled food that can be a mundane bore.  Wouldn’t you rather be looking straight through the cans to see what you’re actually purchasing? Thanks to Klear Can, this may be the new reality of food packaging.

For starters, there haven’t been metal can advancements in over 200 years.  That may come as a surprise to most, since 50 billion cans are used each year. However, Klear Can has been working toward a new way of displaying food, and is kickstarting a change in the way we see canned foods.

Milacron unveiled Klear Can in Plastics and Packaging in 2014. According to information found on Milacron’s website, Klear Can is cost competitive and uses the same filling technology as metal cans. The can’s three-layer barrier gives products a two to five year shelf life. The polypropylene and polyethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) containers underwent 18 months of tests and trials to ensure it met all industry standards for food safety and manufacturing. The materials used to create Klear Can contain no BPA – a topic that gains a lot of attention in the news and has been covered on our blog.

Klear Can allows consumers to view the product they are purchasing and enhances shelf appeal, giving brand owners the ability to display the quality of the products they are producing. Soups, vegetables, fruits and meats are a few products that may use Klear Can. The product could soon be seen on shelves near you, as Del Monte is predicted to become the first customer of the product.

The possibilities of Klear Can don’t end there. The can has a variety of design options including colored plastic and in-mold labels. It’s also stackable, dent-resistant, and 40 to 50 percent lighter than metal cans – reducing transportation costs and carbon emissions. To add to it all, Klear Can is recyclable – that’s music to our ears!

Milacron isn’t the only company looking to change the way we can food items. Sonoco is also taking on the clear can concept with TruVue. With all the packaging innovation happening in the world one thing is for certain: making a decision on what canned items to purchase could soon get a little more Klear.
